Johannes A. Gaertner was a poet, author, professor of art history. He received a doctorate in theology from the University of Heidelberg in 1936. To avoid conscription into the army he emigrated to Peru in 1936. Johannes and his wife moved to New York in 1946. In 1947 Gaertner was hired at Lafayette College where he taught a number of humanities courses and ultimately founded the Art History Department in 1955. A beloved professor, he remained at Lafayette until his retirment in 1977. This exhibit is a retrospective of his pen and ink drawings created over these years.
